It's closer to the WWE than legitimate pugilism ranking in that respect. E.g., when Matt Lindland won a string of fights, culminating in a '#1 contender fight', and won said fight, he was subsequently fired so he wouldn't win the UFC Middleweight "World" Championship. Not pretty enough apparently. They wanted someone that looked like Ace Franklin to carry the title for the organisation.

That is out of whack then. How do they know who is the next contender?.They just look at a fighter if they look good they "wil" make him a champion"?.
How do peopel know if the champions opponent is a legit MMA fighter let alone a Class A MMA fighter.
I've seen a UFC with a challenger with 5 fights under his belt..WTF is that?.
That's Dana and his hype machine hard at work. Alot of guys do work for there shot though, Fitch had something like a 9 fight win streak before Dana reluctantly gave him a title shot. Same with Lay Praynard...I mean Gray Maynard, dude has won 9 in a row, and even though he turns people into mattresses, he is getting a title shot because nobody can seem to stop him...
Matt Lindland was cut for wearing a shirt from an online ******** site, he was fighting in a casino and was told he couldn't wear the shirt. He wore it anyway.
As far as rankings go the closest to a Ring ****zine is the Sherdog , the Fight ****zine rankings are atrociously bad, if you want good computerized rankings go to . Another good rankings site is the which compile the rankings of the top 20 MMA sites and average them.
As to knowing who's legit, hardcore fans tend to know the top 50 or so guys in every division, so knowing who's for real isn't much of an issue. In the UFC guys winning fights fight other guys winning fights and it tends to sort itself out.

I mean from a legit point of view do they take their resume and confirm them.I could just go up to them and show my school diploma, and whip some bum's then tell them "hey guys" i just beat 5 opponents and I am in.

I think UFC is a Bul.lcrap organization out to make a lot of money from unsuspecting "blood thirsty","wish they could" fans.
Some people should question their non existing rating and standard.
No rankings system. It really is just a matter of who can sell more fights.
That's why Yushin Okami has been on the cusp of a title shot for like 3 years. Dana made a big deal about how the Marquardt-Okami fight was 100% for the title shot and now he's gone back on that. What a joke.
