Toney's coach did a terrible job

I accept that Toney is old and fat. I accept that he had zero understanding of the ground game and that, due to his attitude, may not have been the most willing student.

    But that was terrible.

I've not seen the replay yet, but it looked to me that Randy shot for a takedown, poorly. He was too far away and so didn't get to where he needed to be to get a good hold of Toney's legs. Toney then made the mistake of trying to sprawl (I think? hard to tell with such shoddy technique) even though there was no need to. He then ended up on his back giving up side-control. Pulling guard would've been bad enough, but side control?

There's no need to sprawl if a takedown is that bad. He should've either stepped back out of range or tried to punch Couture while he was down.

Then on the ground he didn't keep his knee up to attempt to block the transition to mount, and he didn't use his hips or elbow or anything really on the ground. So he ends up mounted and finished.

I started BJJ a month ago and am under no illusions about my abilities, but even I would've done better than that on the ground.

Toney would've lost even with a great camp. But by getting some random nobody to train him he ensured that he had even less of a chance. He even came in fatter than expected despite apparently training twice per day.

By the way, I don't think Couture should get his black belt off of that performance. There was nothng wrong with it, but there are white belts who could've won that fight IMO. Perhaps he was already set to get it but they just waited for a big occassion.

He wanted some money plain and simple.

Toney is crap, how was his counterpunching style going to work against a wrestler?

Its hard for any boxer to win in mma, but toney never had any chance, i could see it coming a mile off.

I'm glad anyway, Toney is a wanker i took pleasure in seeing him submit

He's out-classed in MMA. That's the bottom line. It's hard to use boxing when someone wont stay in range for you to box, it's even harder when you're on your back. You can't box on the bottom.

            Really.

I also agree he shouldn't get a black belt for beating a subbing a transparent belt like toney. But MMA trainers are prostitulyzing BJJ. Soon enough you'll have kids wearing black belts.

That's just sad. He subbed two white belts in a row and then got a black belt. Pathetic.

I just think it was a terrible time to give it to him. I think they just did it for a moment but their's no doubt in my mind that Randy most likely deserves the black belt. He's been in a lot of abu dabi tournaments so I think he's been working his BJJ for some time now.

I agree thought MMA is prostituting black belts. Rashad Evans gets a ****in black belt? wtf.

James Toney's corner was bad? BJ p4p had the worst coaches in your corner during a fight that I have ever seen.

BJ corners are morons. They really believed the hype about BJ, and I think bj deserved the hype but his coaches shouldn't expect him to overpower Edgar.

Their instructions were "you're stronger than this guy, go get him bj, **** him bj, bj can I love you bj, **** him up bj"

What the hell? JUST SCREAM TO HIM: YOU AREN'T FAST ENOUGH TO STAND WITH EDGAR. GET HIM TO THE GROUND AT ALL COSTS. USE YOUR BB MORON!

Actually Randy never grappled in ADCC.

But I retake what I said. He deserves the black belt due to time alone. 13 years of practicing BJJ and using it in competitions. He does have great anti-bjj but his offensive skills aren't of a real black belt. He going for that poor planned and set up semi-standing (don't know other word) kata gatame on toney was really bad.

But yeh, Bad timing. But he deserves it.

Yea that was horrible, should have atleast told him to kick his legs.
My trainer got frustrated and yelled "Kick his f.ucking legs BJ!"
