Amanda Nunes retires from MMA following UFC 289 win

Amanda Nunes announced her retirement from MMA following her win at UFC 289.

In the main event of Saturday’s UFC pay-per-view, Nunes dominated Irene Aldana, winning via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-43). After the fight, Nunes placed both the UFC Bantamweight and Featherweight titles on the ground, then placed her gloves on the ground and announced her retirement from MMA.

“Tonight is a perfect night to retire,” she said in her post-fight interview. During her interview, she noted that she was the only Brazilian champion in the UFC, saying “Brazil, get your s*** together! I believe in you!”

Nunes originally won the Bantamweight title from Meisha Tate on July 9, 2016. She briefly lost the championship to Juliana Pena in December of 2021 before regaining it on July 30 of last year. She has also held the Featherweight Championship, defeating Cris Cyborg in July of 2017. She has been champion ever since, her most recent featherweight title defense taking place in March of 2021.

Nunes ends her MMA career with 23 wins and 5 losses, with her career beginning in 2008.

Cong****, Nunes really has nothing left to prove. The female GOAT and by a large margin, not even debatable like whoever the men's GOAT is.

I'll miss seeing the Lioness in action. 7 years as champion, time really flies. I just think of all the fun times I had watching boxing and UFC with my friends at my place throughout the years, and Amanda Nunes was a big part of that.

She won the title on the main event of UFC 200, and UFC 290 is coming up next. All this hype over Ronda vs. Cyborg from 2013-2015, and Nunes comes along and destroys both of them lol.

She's going the same route as GSP and Khabib, retiring on top.

Yeah, I'm just happy she's retiring while the division seems dead pretty much.

Would have ****** if she retired while the division was hot while she's still in her prime.

Too many fighters hang on too long and get beaten out of the sport, it's a story just as old as the fight game itself. Nunes is one of the rare fighters who defied fate.

Amanda looked FAR better than I expected her to. She must have known it was her final fight all through camp and that's what motivated her.

Would have liked to see the rubber match with Pena, but Pena really doesn't have a strong argument after Amanda absolutely positively dominated her in the second fight. Kind of like the Shevchenko fight... would have been nice, but it doesn't do a ton for her legacy.

So who do you got for men's GOAT? I got Anderson Silva, maybe Fedor, GSP. I'd say Fedor for heavyweight, Jose Aldo for feather, GSP at least for welter, Khabib for lightweight. I'd say Demetrius "Mighty Mouse" Johnson for flyweight for his 11 title defenses in the UFC plus now being flyweight champ in One.

I lean towards GSP. I have no issue with anyone else you mentioned considered the GOAT, except being maybe Khabib. I like him and he gave very dominant performances, but his run at the top was very short and he was injured for a lot of time during his prime years, not his fault but he missed out on potentially winning the title sooner because of the injuries.

Khabib could be ranked the best LW of all time though, but not the best p4p.

Fedor was great, but I'd probably rank Stipe higher if I looked more deeper into it.

Jon Jones would have been a good choice too, if he didn't fail like 88 drug tests.

She barely won more than she lost. 5 losses! Get back in the kitchen, do something useful and make the Great Nash a sandwich. Nash out

I would pay to see Nunes come back against the great Nash

It would sure be a battle for the ages, but Nunes W23 L5, vs Nash, an unbeaten W0 L0 warrior, you'd have to expect Nash to keep his 0, especially after having protected it for 39 years already. Nash out
