Khamzat Chimaev promises ‘coffin’ for Nate Diaz in response to UFC 279 promo

Khamzat Chimaev anticipates the same result many fans and observers do in his UFC 279 fight against Nate Diaz.

In response to a new promo for the welterweight matchup on Sept. 10 in Las Vegas, Chimaev posted a coffin emoji with the 209 area code, a reference to the Stockton, Calif., territory Diaz calls home.

The UFC 279 matchup marks Diaz’s final obligation to the UFC after an extended layoff in which the one-time lightweight title challenger repeatedly demanded a fight from the promotion. This past month, he appeared on The MMA Hour to accuse the UFC of holding him under contract for a trilogy with his two-time opponent, Conor McGregor, and request his final fight.

Diaz remains a significant underdog against Chimaev, who has blazed to the top of the division with five straight wins including a “Fight of The Year” contender against Gilbert Burns in his previous outing. Diaz is 1-3 in his past four outings, most recently suffering a lopsided loss to current welterweight title challenger Leon Edwards. Despite the setback, Diaz won a moral victory with a last-minute surge that rattled the U.K. standout.

The Instagram account linked with Team Diaz reacted to the UFC 279 promo with a fist emoji.

Terrible matchmaking. Can't see any other situation than Diaz getting rag dolled.

I know it's a long shot, but it would be great if Diaz pulled off the win just to stick it to Dana.

Reminds me of the time Dana put Jonny Hendricks against Paulo Costa. He's doing Diaz dirty just like he did Hendricks.

As much of a **** as Dana is, he did ask Nate Diaz to slap him back in 2016, creating one of the greatest gifs in the history of the internet.

It's because it's Nate's final fight of the contract. Jake Paul is next for Nate

For as long as he's been under UFC contract, you think Dana would have given Diaz a final fight that wasn't seen as a total mismatch with a style that Diaz struggled with his whole career.

At least let Diaz go out in a ****er against someone with a similar ranking.

At 170, Diaz is ranked #20. Khamzat is ranked #3.

Playing devil's advocate a bit but you think Diaz at least has better BJJ? Maybe he pulls it out with a random unexpected submission.

Yeah when I said in my first post that it would be great if Diaz pulled off the win, a submission was what I had in mind. I can't see him winning a decision, and while Diaz does have decent power I don't think he has much of a puncher's chance.

If Diaz loses, but at least looks good, then I think the Paul fight is sellable
