Corey Hill undergoes surgery for broken leg, sidelined for 12-18 months

After snapping his leg during a fight with Dale Hartt at Wednesday's "UFC Fight Night 16: UFC Fight for the Troops," Corey Hill has undergone surgery and will be out of action for approximately 12 to 18 months.

Hill, who broke his leg during the TKO loss, went under the knife this morning at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C., according to UFC.com's Thomas Gerbasi.

"Hill is currently resting in the hospital with his family," Gerbasi wrote. "The former 'Ultimate Fighter' standout is handling the injury well and is in good spirits a day after suffering the clean break to his right leg while throwing a kick, which was blocked by Hartt."

The complete Hill-Hartt fight is available, free of charge, at UFC.com. (Viewing is not recommended for the faint of heart.)

Hill, competing in just his fourth professional bout, snapped his leg just 20 seconds into the second round. The loss dropped his career record to 2-2, which includes a 1-1 mark in the UFC.

In other news from the injury-plagued card:

    * Headliner Yoshiyuki Yoshida, who suffered a brutal knockout to Josh Koscheck, left the cage on a stretcher. He was treated for a concussion and released from the hospital that same night.
    * Jonathan Goulet, who suffered a quick knockout to Mike Swick in the night co-main event, was also treated and released due to a concussion. A potential knee injury will be examined when he returns home to Canada.
    * Razaak Al-Hassan, who suffered a gruesome armbar submission to Steve Cantwell, did not break his arm. However, he did suffer a a dislocated right elbow. An update on his status should be known by Friday.

The moment Yoshida was knocked out on his feet and staring in another direction of Koscheck, the referee should have stopped the fight. And to think, they call these guys "professional," **** turns into a circus with most of these referees more and more every day.

Have to say, I didn't expect Koscheck to bring it this match. Maybe pissed off about getting tossed around by Alves?

Do you honestly think the ref could have gotten to him before Kos KTFO him? I highly doubt it.

A PRIDE referee could have EZ PZ.

In all seriousness, there was a few second gap between the punches, even Koscheck thought about hitting him again. You can see the hesitation.

I think the hesitation was just to make sure the punch landed.

Could it have been stopped after the first punch? Definitely. But I don't think it would have been possible for a ref to get in between them at that point.

Cory Hill's injury is due to him being such a damn bean poll. 6'4" at 155lbs? Are you kidding me? I'm 6'2" and it would be a stretch for me to make 205, I certainly couldn't get under 205.

He could certainly use about 20lbs of muscle to at least protect his damn bones.

agreed, the UFC seems to have lowered their standards for refs. that idiot for Wiman-Miller "c'mon guys, do something" u ****tin me?

the thing that impressed me bout Koscheck is that he realized that Yoshida was protecting 'gainst the overhand rite and saw the opening for his straight. i don't he'll be mistaken for a Marcus Davis just yet but thats a pretty significant improvement for a wrestler.

eventually, when/if hill's metabolism slows down, he'll have to move up to 170.

i feel bad for him though, all this time off is the opposite of what he needs

I think it was easily possible to step in between once you saw him out on his feet.

PS: Since when does muscle protect your shin? The dude just hasn't thrown enough leg kicks to temper the bone.
