James Irvin Tests Positive For Methadone and Oxymorphone

UFC light heavyweight James Irvin has tested positive for methadone and oxymorphone following his first-round TKO loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The positive test was today confirmed to MMAFrenzy.com by Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer.

Both methadone and oxymorphone are commonly prescribed pain killers for moderate to severe pain.

The banned substances, which are considered “Drugs of Abuse” by the NSAC, were detected on a urinalysis drug test conducted by the NSAC following the bout.

Irvin has up to 20 days to request a formal hearing and faces up to a $20,000 fine and suspension.

The NSAC previously announced that all eleven fighters that were tested following the event had tested negative for steroids.

Does Lyoto Machida deserve a title shot?

Chuck Liddell doesn’t think so. But rather than play the “He’s boring” card like most other people do, he’s citing the lack of competition Machida has faced:

“He beat tito and who else? Sokoudjou? So did Glover (Glover Teixeira, another fighter from The Pit - FL), so does Glover get a title shot? Machida’s tough and he’s a great fighter, but have him fight a couple more top guys. I enjoy watching him, he’s a good technical fighter and he scores and doesn’t get scored on. He’s got knockouts (1 KO - FL) and he’s landed hard shots and I think he mixes it up when he needs to.”

      Here is some interesting facts:

Not only Irvine was busted for Oxymorph, Justin Levens from AFFLICTION was too.

Both samples went to the same lab.

Normal human tolerance is 120 ng/ml. Both men tested around the 10K area.

Couple years back, this same lab tested Bas Rutten positive for Oxymorph in the 12K range.

Either these guys have high tolerance or they were zombies.

I think Irvine and Levens should be punished for doing painkillers, but if you've got stuff like this happening, switch labs and at least do an investigation.

****, you know how many people are addicted to painkillers? They don't run opioid dependents ads all day on the radio for nothing.

Because guys are using banned substances and getting caught, they should switch labs? Huh? There needs to be more evidence than a few dopes getting caught with obscene levels before a "switch" or "investigation" needs to go down. As it stands, there are split samples; if one sample shows up as positive, they send the second split to a second lab for verification of all positive results.

Nope. It's great that Levens and Irving got caught cheating. But with the tests registering amounts that could kill an elephant, it gives the two leverage if they brought this to court. Even if the second test confirms that they did have oxymorph and shows the correct dosage. I would at least put up an investigation on why it did that and at least try to fine tune it or correct the problem.
