‘I love watching him fight’
Wanderlei Silva’s defeat at UFC 79 to Chuck Liddell was the third in a row for the Brazilian, a fact that could set back any career and even relegate a fighter to the ranks of b-fighter. However, what happened could not have been more different. Wand seems to have gained more fans and already has them yearning for his return to the octagon, to once again show the courage and the resilience he displayed in his epic battle with the Iceman.
One of those to admire the Brazilian’s performance was Hawaiian BJ Penn, who will fight on January 19 for the UFC lightweight belt, against Joe Stevenson.
Chuck’s my boy and I’m glad he came away with the victory. But out of all of Wanderlei’s fights, I give him the most respect for that one. He took some hard shots. They say a lot of Pride fighters and Japanese fighters are on steroids. But Wanderlei didn’t look like he was on steroids, it looked like he was in great shape and he came in and was just awesome. I couldn’t believe he didn’t go down as Chuck hit him so hard! Wanderlei’s always had my respect but he earned it once again that night. I hope he comes back and wins 10 fights straight because I love to see him — he entertains me every time he steps into the ring and I’d love to see him keep fighting,” said Penn to the British newspaper The Sun.
