Why were the Gracie's unhappy with the early rules changes (for UFC 5 I think)?

Royce mostly used grappling and submission, right? Why did he dislike headbutts and eye pokes being ruled out? Or is stuff like that part of BJJ as well?

it wasn't the headbutts and eye pokes.

eye pokes along with fishhooking were already banned since the beginning.

headbutts were okay in the beginning and the gracies they didn't mind those.


what the gracies didn't like was the rounds , judges scoring and time limits.

they felt giving rounds and a time limit would encourage people to just hold on and try to win on score cards.

they felt the same way about brazilian jiu-jitsu's point scoring system.

if you look at royce and rickson and royler's (helio gracie's side) kids , even in sports bjj , they go for the submission not to score points.

helio gracie's side of the family believe in bjj as a self defense system.

they don't teach their students how to compete in tournaments. they teach their students how to win a fight or survive a fight.

that's why they believe the scoring system for sports jiu-jitsu is bad for bjj.
