i don't know about "an instant before you land"

you can mess up your hand if the guy moves forward and you land before anticipated.



but in boxing you don't clinch your fist tight until you turn the punch over when throwing crosses and overhands.

you clinch your fist all the way when throwing hooks and uppercuts though.
