Calzaghe tried to fight the #1 guy in the division, but Collins ducked him. Then he fought for a world title, defended against several top 10 guys who were former title holders, tried to get Hopkins into the ring (Slopkins agreed then changed his mind), unified, unified again, then stepped up in weight and beat the best guy in the division above him.
Calzaghe is great

Apparently Collins was injured. Not how I remember it but apparently that's what was said at the time. I thought there was a Collins interview where he says that he had no motivation by that point etc. but I can't find it.
Still, point is, Calzaghe was willing to fight the best champion in the division from a young age. Hatton on the other hand waited quite a bit longer.

True, but Calzaghe won a title and then faced several top 10 guys and former champions. Hatton fought one former champion (Phillips) and not many/no top guys before he got his title shot.
And when Calzaghe unified, it was against someone that most considered the best of the other 3 beltholders. When Hatton did it, it was against the worst of the other 3 champs (who had lost 2 of his last 5).
Not taking anything away from Hatton, he has fought very tough opposition in the past few years, but he took longer than Calzaghe to face top 10 opposition or challenge for a belt.
Equal number of fights, but IMO Calzaghe has better wins, has faced more top 10 opponents, and took hard fights several years before Hatton did.
