Anyone here ever try to give up "gangsta" style rap but then realize it sucks...

not having any gangsta rap in your cd collection. In mid february of this year, in an attempt to ween myself off sinful music...I got rid of the music that made me feel most guilty. I threw all my rap cds away that talked about selling drugs, killin etc. Aka Gangsta rap. For a few weeks, it didn't bother me. When I needed that aggressive content, I just listened to Limp Bizkit. And then the rest was positive rap like Talib Kweli, Common etc. So But now I can't take it anymore. lol. I love limp bizkit, but I cant just listen to them when I want to have that party style/aggressive vibe. What I realized is, while getting rid of that kind of rap is an improvement, bottomline is, the kind of music I was listening to was still bad.

I mean Limp Bizkit swears ALOT(and has violent content from time to time), and even concious rappers like Common and Kweli swear and say sinful stuff from time to time. So the only way God would be happy with me is if I listened to Gospel music, but I'm not ready to do that at 23 years old. I want to be get rid of all of my bad music someday, but not right now. I just don't want to, I like my music, its fun to listen to.

So basically, I've decided to listen to some gangsta rap again. Like Wu-Tang for example and Nas. I don't want to go any further than that. I no longer want that kind of rap to consume my cd collection. I want my cd collection to still be mainly positive uplifting rap. But I still need my fix of the street ****. Atleast at this stage in my life.

Anyone else go through the same thing or feel the same way? Its hard to give up all violent rap, when thats often the best rap music.

I'm not the most religious guy.

And while I am a Christian, I still listen gangsta rap and stuff like that. But it's not like I'm living that life. Regardless of what you listen to, what really matters in my opinion is your actions. As long as you're a good person I don't think it really matters what music you listen to, unless it's some extra hardcore Satanist **** or something like that.

I mean Big L and JMT and a lot of rappers probably spew out some anti-Christian lyrics once and a while, and even though I might listen to a song that has a line with that kind of stuff in it, doesn't mean I necessarily agree with it or even like it when they say that certain line.
But like I said I think the things you do are more important than what kind of music you listen to. I do agree that you need to mix it up, though. I mean after a while of listening to street **** I need my fix of conscious rap/some other genre altogether.

Thats how i use to look at(and still do at the end of the day). As long as your not living the life(which im not at all), why does it matter? but then theres hardcore christians that will say, well if your listening to it, that proves your heart is with the devil. Its tough...lol

As long as they are creative with what they say instead of just trying to say how hard they are in their music, then it's fine. The Wu does this perfectly. I like every kind of Hip-Hop as long as it takes talent to make what they put out. There is no talent in MC's like Rick Ross and Wayne. In general, most rappers out today just spit weak metaphors and similes. For instance they always say **** like "I'm high like ____", and most of them are so vague, I could easily think of over a hundred things that are high. Kites, planes, clouds, Heaven, birds, etc, etc, etc. It takes little to no talent to spit half the **** they say, even these gangster rappers. If I need a hype vibe, I at least need some description to the material, like some Mobb Deep or Big Pun for instance. The thing is with me is, if I can come up with them rhymes, then why should I appreciate it? We're on a boxing website, right? It could be the same thing. Why would you favorite a fighter that, lets say, has a 7-18 record. Why would you praise someone like that? Obviously there is no talent there and probably doesn't work and. I'm just trying to compare to **** we all can relate to let you feel me.

I don't care. I listen to what I listen to. Music shouldn't make you feel guilty or bad. You like what you like.

I don't think you should limit the music you listen too. As long as you realize music is music and live your life in a god fairing mannor thats what counts.

It all about lyrics and flow. I don't care what a rapper talks about if it's super lyrical with clever word play and metaphors. However a lot of G rap is basic as ****.
