    Has Rap Become So Fake...

That rappers don't have to even appear like they're living or had lived what they're rapping about?

If you take a look back, most successful rappers either had some form of street credibility or gained it before they got put on. At the very least, they had to have a grimey crew around them. There would be no **** talking, unless they were about something or their peoples were. Today, these cats are getting a pass and keeping it moving.

Today we have an actor from a teenage soap opera (Drake), a snitch/traitor (Diddy), a correctional officer, a ***** (Wayne-40 Glocc situation)(Yung Berg), a male stripper (? Game- Not sure 100% on it though) and many more that have and haven't been outed. Feel free to add.

Not only that, but you had to have skills on the mic. I'm not even getting into that. Rant/End

Hiphop is in its glam/disco stage.

    Falling off the map.

Kind of a good thing imo. Sifts out all the corny acts and followers. By then, it will still have the people who always loved Hiphop for Hiphop and not just use it as a means to make money.

Seriously, when you have rappers and producers bragging how they made a track in 5 minutes, is a lack of dedication to your craft supposed to impress me?

Paying attention to MTV is a part of the problem.

Another problem is, that is where todays generation got their Hiphop from as opposed to actually tuning in to the mix shows to make your pause tapes.

They want to seem like they're so natural at it that they can make a ****ty track in no time.

It might have something to do with almost everyone trying to be like Pac (the amount of tracks and recorded vocals in a short period of time).

I agree, but Jay-Z being at the top is not understandable though. It's part of the problem. I don't care how good he still is lyrically.

Do you think the up and comers of the 90's would have let him hang around?

Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, KRS One, etc. are and were all great mc's, that were as respected by the younger generation that was coming up in their time as Jay-Z is now by the up and comers now. And they were all still good and kept putting out music, but the up and comers made them play the background with their content. Today, they're asking Jay-Z to move aside, someone with talent needs to make him.

"I hear it all the time -- 'Yo, he should let the young guys, the new generation of guys come in,'" Jay explained in an interview. "But you don't become the front-runner in music because someone lets you. You have to claim your shoes..."(Reuters)
              - Jay-Z

The old guard is so far ahead mentally, it's not even funny. These rappers need to listen and take heed to this. Either they don't understand it or don't have enough talent to pull it off.

I think the difference is that todays "artist", is more concerned with being a "hustler", a "businessman", an "entreprenuer",

that they completely forget why they're rapping in the first place.

Because they felt they had something to say, rather than have people think something about them.

The older cats are still technically better simply because they've been doing it longer. Its the same as any musician. The longer you've been playing and practicing your craft, the better you're going to be.

Todays crop think they should just be entitled to greatness because they're new.

I agree. The hustling mentality is to find a way to get the most money as quick as possible. That's all good, but as a result, their work ethic is trash and when they figure that out and start working, it's too late. Because becoming a great MC and lyricist takes time; that vocab, conscious thinking, flow, etc. has to be built up.

Believe it or not, everyone is trying to be like Souljah Boy. Where they get put on by making a hit record. Some time before, these cats would have to build a rep or buzz where they were from before they could move on. And the rep was built on how nice you were on the mic.

The older cats, while they might have gotten better (except for Nore), they haven't been able to adjust. Only the ones that can adjust or have a huge hardcore following remain relevant after double digit years.
