Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 8/31/08

Always surrounded by controversy, The Game made his big debut of LAX at #2 this week. The former G-Unit member sold 238,000 copies of his highly anticipated album, and was beat out by a new release from Slipknot. Lil Wayne takes the #6 spot this week, selling 54,000 more copies of his double platinum album Tha Carter III. Looks like stardom runs in the Knowles family as Beyonce's little sister Solange debuts her sop****re effort Sol Angel &The Hadley St. Dreams at #9 this week with 46,200 copies sold. Rihanna's re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad holds down the #12 spot for the second week in a row with 37,300 copies sold. Ice Cube rounds out the top 5 for Hip Hop and R&B at #14 with 30,300 copies sold of Raw Footage.

Nas holds on to the #36 position with 12,200 copies of his Untitled album sold this week, while Plies' Definition of Real takes #44 with 10,600 sold. M.I.A continues to see the effects of her "Paper Planes" and the numerous rappers jumping on the remix. Kala sold 9,200 copies and landed her the #48 spot. Rumor has it that since seeing her new popularity on the charts, M.I.A has begun to re-think her plans for an early retirement from music. David Banner comes in at #51 selling 9,100 copies of Greatest Story Ever Told while V.I.C debuted Beast at #73 with just over 7,000 copies sold.

The Game's new album has been a disappointment, it was hyped about too much and didnt deliver... It was an average album at best...

Still surprised on his sales figures, 238,000 is disappointing, was still expecting way more....

Hype=sales. There was no real hype on Game's album. I really don't consider the internet hype. Hype to me is being on the billboard hot 100 consistently. He had one single that did well now he has another with Wayne. his numbers are indicative of the climate. Ross, Nas, and Snoop sold similar. I expect Jeezy to do the same probably 300k. He has a really solid single that has gotten run of the span of months.

you can't sell 900,000 anymore unless your Eminem or Kanye West.

Even 50 doesn't do a milllion the first week or two anymore.

Alright I'll admit it...I have confession to make. I'm not really truth, the white hip hop fan from CT who likes Roy Jones and the Celtics.

I'm actually Jay-Z...I know its hard to believe right? Its the Roc!!!

The internet is the biggest hype machine without a doubt.

I can't agree. TV/radio>>> internet. Having a solid run on the charts and tv coutndowns is a lot more beneficial. Most of the hip hop fans that are on the net heavy just burn your ****.

I agree in the aspect of being a new artist. ******* and what not is very helpful in getting attention, also uploading mixtapes. But in terms of promoting a major album the media outside of the net is the best route.
