When gangsta rap came out, it wasn't cool to be rapping without being angry or coming off hard...but rap's devolved to where there aren't too many credible gangstas - no one's mad anymore - it's just posturing, bragging about material possessions, claiming to be fly without actually acting like it...whatever - and it's all pop. When everything that pretends it's not pop Is pop...the pop rappers can't get signed anymore - and can't get airplay. Even the poppiest out there, guys like Black Eyed Peas, like to call themselves hip-hop and mix profanity in with their lyrics and act hard...
I, for one, miss guys like Young MC, Tone Loc, Kid 'n Play, Heavy D, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, etc.
