Pro wrestler Butch Reed passes away

Part of the badass tag team Doom back in the day along with Ron Simmons.

    He was 66.

Sad day today. I loved Doom when I was a kid. Nancy Benoit was their original manager before Teddy Long.

Fun fact, when Vince wanted to take the Intercontinental title off Ricky Steamboat, he wanted make Butch Reed the first black IC champion.

Unfortunately he no-showed an event. So Jake Roberts was next in line, but he also no-showed. So they ended up giving the belt to a guy who became the longest IC champ ever, the Honky Tonk Man.

    R.I.P. Butch Reed

Butch Reed faded from the scene before I became a fan really but he was part of a match I used to use as a kid to prove wrestling was real to my friends (obvs I turned out to be wrong!) Doom vs Arn Anderson and Barry Windham at Starrcade 1990. 2 big jacked up black guys vs a pair of less big but rough, looked like they'd kick the **** out of you at some redneck bar, guys you could 100% believe that was real. You don't see wrestling like that anymore and it's a shame.

That's why I always liked the NWA/WCW product better. Those dudes looked like some legit badasses, rather than cartoon characters and sheit.

Reed and Simmons looked like two mofos you did not want to run into in a dark alley.

I loved that he was called The Natural and had bleach blonde hair lol. Doom was kinda cool too. I should've realized sooner it was him and Ron Simmons, but it wasn't until I heard their voices in interviews. Those masks didn't fit too well, so it's kind of obvious when you look back before they even unmasked. I remember them in some kind of round robin tournament in Starrcade 1989 too with The Road Warriors, The Steiners and probably 1 other team. There was also a singles tournament and it had some kind of point system. I gotta see if it's on the network because I haven't seen it in years.

According to Bruce Prichard on his podcast, Butch Reed was crazy over in Florida, so I guess he worked that territory a lot.

It's a shame the territory days are gone. Likely for good.

It seemed like there was more variety/different flavors in the pro wrestling business back then.
