If you don't want to go military:

Go to sea as a commercial fisherman. Contract out to fight forest fires. Be a miner or a logger. Long haul trucking is shorthanded and they'll put you up in hotel and pay your schooling if you can pass a DOT physical.

All the above pays well enough that a young man can buy himself some nice shoes and a hotrod to tool around in during his time off. Good luck and have fun, little brother.
