US American heavyweight boxer James "Lights Out" Toney (69 - 4 - 3) announced his retirement today on a press conference held in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
During an intense sparring session, in preparation for another shot at one of the heavyweight crowns (he fought to a draw against WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman March 18), he suffered a broken jaw, six broken ribs and several concussions. At 37 years of age, James Toney does not feel able to recover from these injuries: "I've got taken too much punishment in my career. I've kicked some serious ass in the past, but now it's Hoskins' time, the little guy got some serious power and skills".
Donald "It's That Boi" Hoskins sparred with the former champ Toney and has not listened to his trainer as he told him to hold back because he was aware of the immense power Hoskins can generate - motivated by his will to defeat a legend, Hoskins knocked down Toney fourty-seven times in the first round of their sparring session.
The future of James Toney is uncertain, but he probably will never again dare to step into the ring with Donald Hoskins.
