    Jesus Christ.

These last 12-18 months have been awful for aircraft accidents and disasters.

An Islamic State-linked group in Egypt has reportedly claimed responsibility for downing a Russian passenger jet in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

"The fighters of the Islamic State were able to down a Russian plane over Sinai province that was carrying over 220 Russian crusaders. They were all killed, thanks be to God," the statement on Twitter said.

What is worrying a lot of people in the aviation safety community is the haste with which both the Russian and Egyptian authorities seem to be saying: 'We know this was mechanical failure.' In the event of any disaster like this, particularly when the aircraft is at high attitude, there's generally the need simply to wait until the black boxes - the flight data and cockpit voice recorders - have been analysed and then start to work out the sequence of events. And it has been asserted that perhaps they want to do this on the Egyptian side to rule out any *********-related activity, because the area in which the aircraft was flying over is a hotbed of Islamist fighters who are taking on Egyptian forces.

Absolutely awful. At this point it doesn't really sound like it was targeted, but groups will want to take responsibility. Russia doesn't have a great record with plane safety, and they're saying it was due to a technical problem. Plane literally split in half.

But the above post is interesting. If it was attacked, I wonder how Russia will respond.

It wasn't shot down, I'm guessing it was a bomb.

Hasn't there been like 15 Russian plane crashes in the past few years? That's ridiculously high.
