Velvet Underground > Beatles IMO. Not in popularity, not in music history, not in lingering influence, but in my humble opinion. I agree with him.

I'm a huge Lou Reed fan. Never really cared for The Beatles, but I would put John Lennon up there in the Lou Reed Stratosphere. All happily under David Bowie.

Love the Beatles. But i guess, now that i compare them to the Velvet Underground, they were kind of fluffy artsy wanabees.

Velvet Underground is where the real dirty junkie rock is. Beatles were more kids tv in comparison.
