[PLEASE HELP] Which country makes the best music?

I'm talking about modern music (let's say the last 100 years or so) for the sake of this conversation. Which country has created the greatest music? Back it up. Try not to choose a place only because you were born in X or you're of Y descent. We're talking purely about the quality of the music here. Be as objective as you can.

I made a poll, but don't take it too seriously. Many countries were left off and if your country of choice isn't there, simply mentio it here. There are too few poll slots to accommodate everyone.

For the record, I think it may go US, Germany, UK, then Brazil. I feel I can defend my choices to the death.

Germany was really ahead of the curve in the late 60s and 70s. I give them a ton of credit for that.

Brazil wins out in Latin America for me. Not really close. Jobim, Vinicius, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, Joćo Gilberto, Os Mutantes. A goldmine if you ask me.

As far as the US and the UK go, I think the US has generally had the more innovative stuff. Hell, I actually don't think it's super close now that I consider it. Both full of greatness, though, don't get me wrong.

        UK: Rock

USA: Rock, Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop, Pop, R&B, Country.

I would say probably USA, based on big or dominant contributions from all the genres listed. But, I don't know what the hell the rest of the world listens to. I am assuming USA music is popular everywhere. When I think of UK contributions I mostly think of Rock, mostly from 60s-70s.

too broad of a spectrum. would need to narrow it down even further imo.

That really was my dilemma, frankly. I pictured cries of "what about Vietnam?!" but I don't think this particular subject needs that broad of a range, come to think of it. The big ones have a pretty solid lead.

I would probably at least take Mexico and France out. Jamaica may stay.

i'm curious, what periods of jamaican music are you into?

new jamaican music drives me bananas, but the influx of youth into urban areas in the 50's and 60's made for some amazing music.

I honestly can't say I've been listening to what Jamaica's been producing recently. I'm talking Augustus Pablo, Burning Spear, The Congos, etc. Also, if you want to hear something I consider a true unrecognized classic, try Exuma's debut album if you haven't already. My favorite rekkid from '70 by a fair margin.

That's the one man. I'd be curious to hear your opinion of it. It's a wild affair, and it has a few misses, but that's the price you sometimes pay for going all-out.
