I was just listening to Mark Kermode's review of the cinematic year and tried to think of my personal favourites. Got me thinking about music too.
For me, my favourite albums include:
Random Access Memories - Daft Punk
Reflektor - Arcade Fire
Dream River - Bill Callahan
Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend
The Next Day - David Bowie
AM - Arctic Monkeys
Cupid Deluxe - Blood Orange
Not so many exceptional albums this year. Yeezus was alright I guess
Films:
Blackfish
Stoker
Rush
The Place Beyond the Pines
Gravity
Haven't yet had the chance to see Only God Forgives or Captain Phillips, both of which could make my list. People have been raving about this year's films, but personally I don't think it's been a standout year. My favourite cinema experiences are the ones that take me by surprise i.e. I go in knowing very kittle about the film, and come out completely blown away. Recent examples include Drive, Shame and Stoker. Must be something about Gosling, Fassbender and Goode (very slight ****)
