From what I understand Roman ****** came from three sources:

    1. People who were on the losing side of wars against Rome. It wasn't unknown for the Romans to enslave whole peoples who lost wars to them.
    2. Romans convicted of criminal offenses and sold into slavery.
    3. Romans who where debtors and were sold into slavery to cover the debt.

i don't think that the romans were put as ******. most of the ****** have a different race than the romans.

by the way romans never battled each other. they battled with other countries or state and therefore the ones on the losing end who were put as ****** were a different nationality.

Romans most certainly battled each other on a number of occasions ie Caesar Vs Pompey and Augustus Vs Antony being the most notable. And Roman citizens who were debtors were certainly sold as ****** to cover their debts.

Nowhere in any of my posts is there anything stating or implying that the Romans didn't have ****** prior to Caesar Vs Pompey.

The Romans were quite egalitarian. They absorbed conquered peoples into the Empire rather than attempting to subjugate them through constant force.

The historical rules of slavery regardless of empire was war booty, there were only three times where slavery was exclusively one type of people, the slavery by the americans in the cross atlantic slavery of west-african peoples, the slavery of the israelites by the ancient egyptians, the slavery of the eastern european slavics by the ottoman empire
