First, all of this was explained in the movie. The situation was due to a war that destroyed Earth to a point that it couldn't protect people from the sun causing flashes that blinded and killed most people on earth, that is why there were few old people. He memorized the bible because he had been reading it everyday for 30 years. And it wasn't blank at the end, its called braille. It is what blind people use to read. And the girl was on a mission just like Eli, she didn't go into it, just following the voice inside. Also, she tagged along because her mom felt it would be safer for her to be with him then staying where she was.
