mara salvatrucha had a reputation in the 80's in los angeles for being vicious and it was somewhat well earned but that's because they didn't operate like traditional latino barrios.

plus they always had this mystique about how they were vicious because they were former guerrilas and soldiers from el salvador which is not really true. a lot of their members are mexican , guatemalans , hondurans , etc. not even el salvadorians.

the media made ms seem more dangerous than in it is after the el salvadorian president told the u.s. that ms from america and el salvador were working with al qaeda. that's really what gave them headlines. it wasn't even true.
Thanks, I knew a lot of them were not Salvadorian. My friends used to try and rep MS-13 all the time and they were from Honduras. I'm not sure if they had family or whatever in it.

The gangs in DC are small neighborhood based groups that only exist because the more they organized themselves the more they could make from drugs and especially prostitution, which is the major racket in the capital.

in baltimore there aren't really gangs anymore. the dollar is king and heroin is still super hot on the westside. anyone and i mean anyone can go down monroe st. and cop something, and the d-boys grind right underneath security cameras and the "bluelights". drug connects are mostly kept in familys and you usually see one guy who gets a big batch and then puts it out to cousins/brothers/neighbors to sell on the street or with a cell and meet-ups

I'm not a NY/NJ guy, but I hear gangs still mean something up there. in md, its just a free for all. everyone is for themselves
