I had a simmilar situation happen to me when i was about 17, i was going to fight this guy 1 on 1, and i started to, and was beating him and it swiftly became about 10 on 1, luckily for me I beat a hasty retreat and only had a split lip to show for it. It was weird, because i took a lot of punches without really getting marked up.
