Peter Maher The Irish Champion by Matt Dunnellon
I'm not huge on Maher TBH. He's fine, I don't hate him and his story is anything but boring. What makes this book special IMO is depth and accessibility.
depth as in this book added hundred of fights to records, Boxrec does a decent job noting this, other don't, but it's true. Matt doesn't simply unearth Peter but everything and every one around that time even loosely related to Maher in any way.
As a reader with some level of knowledge going in often I think authors fall into a trap of not being able to remember knowing nothing and take for granted their readers know things they may not. Matt does a great job covering need to know info for those who don't without making it tedious for those who do.
Foundational books to read:
Treatise for Self Defense
Boxiana
Fistiania
Pugilistica
Life and Times of Famous Black Pugilists
Also, alot of this is still active:
