Already named Jim Thorpe as #1 with Babe/Wilt tied for number two. Babe whoops Jordan in golf easy and was and still holds Pitching and Hitting records along with being an ambidextrous scratch bowler.

Wilt could pick him up to run downcourt while bouncing a BBall and dunk Jordan. Wilt the most fouled player in BB history because in spite of a dozen rule changes to neuter him, that was still the only way to stop him. Wilt in retirement had private BB tourneys where he whooped all the then current NBAs. Also #1 beach volleyball player and set transcontinental NY to LA record in his Bentley luxury cruiser.

When they did a survey some years ago, it showed that when people were asked “who’s the greatest athlete” they generally picked someone that was active when themselves were young teenagers. That's when we idolize celebrities the most. (Ask my old father, according to him there haven’t been any great athletes since the 1950s.)

If we ask Europeans or South Americans about the greatest athletes, soccer players would probably dominate the list.
Or in China. Millions and millions of Asians play table tennis. Of all those millions, Ma Long was ranked #1 for many years. Ma Long would get million votes from China if they’d pick the world’s greatest athlete.

I tend to not include athletes from teams sports as the greatest anything outside of their sport.
That honor should go to someone who is great without having others to support them.

Would MJ be as great if he were on a team like 96-97 Grizzlies ?
Or the 86-87 Clippers ? 82-82 Rockets ?

I agree with all of that. It's like music, ask anyone what the best era is and they'll tell you the one that means most to them. There is no best era or best athlete, it's just you're own personal opinion.

But that isn't what Bagz and the like think. They literally just straight up just think USA = the best because that's all they've been exposed to.
