I told her that I used to box and she said that her relative boxed too, Rommalis Ellis. I remember reading about him in the amateur newspapers that I used to get from the ABF. I remember seeing the name in the big tourny results. I told her that I remebered the name...... So I go home and look in BoxRec.
She had mentioned that he was in the Olympics, I didn't remember that. But looking at his BoxRec indeed he was there boxing. He made it to the semi-finals. I believe that she had said that he had medaled, a box off against the other guy who lost in the semis, I assume. Or do they just give two bronze medals? Medaling at the Olympics is incredible.
She was mistaken about him winning a professional world title, but he did fight for the IBF belt. He also fought for the NABF belt. Man. making it that far takes soooo much hard work and skill.
Unfortunately, he's in a nursing home now. The part of the sport that NOBODY likes to talk about.
