NSO Group poses ‘a serious threat to phone users'

"The spyware was made by an Israeli cybersecurity firm and mercenary hacking company called NSO Group. And NSO Group claims that it sells spyware to governments so they can track criminals. However, for the past five years, their spyware keeps showing up in cases where activists, journalists and human rights defenders are being hacked."

I read about these dudes before, something came up in my feed a while back. Few weeks, a month maybe? Thing is what we should all know anyway is that basically if you're carrying a smartphone unless you take some pretty significant precautions it's as well to assume that everything you do and or say, everywhere you go, is being logged recorded and stored. Want anonymity or privacy or as much as that's possible in any urban area in any developed nation? Ditch the phone.

Course if you know your history you know that activists, political lawyers, journalists and so on have always been heavily surveilled by intelligence agncies, that ain't anything new... this shet just makes it easier than ever before.

IDK, I'm probably less cautious than I should be even though I ain't really into anything that controversial any more, but it'd be foolish to assume that stuff you say without thinking now couldn't come back to haunt you some time in the future.

What's frightening about this story is that it's a “zero-click” exploit, meaning the user doesn't even have to click on a link or file. Usually, a phone or computer becomes infected with ******* or spyware because of dumb users clicking or visiting dodgy sites. Not anymore!

"Criminals" eh? And what would their definition of criminals be? A few years back, the current speaker of the house wanted congress to pass legislation to criminalize people who criticize government officials.

Yes, it's worrisome that this particular bit of spyware could allow Apple devices to be infected WITHOUT any user action.

But to me it's also troubling who is putting money into buying and encouraging the development of this sort of thing. People who target journalists and human rights defenders etc.

Once again the wealthy elite seem to find a way to fund whatever causes global harm. It's like they are in a constant war against us.
