Paul Scholes was a complete bum at International level, let's face it. And don't give me this stuff about how he was played on the left. He played several tournaments in the middle for England and was anonymous every time.

If anyone was only a great player in only one team i.e in his comfort zone at United, it was Scholes. The guy would probably **** his pants going anywhere else cos he's a shy little ginger tosser.

Good player, mind. Just never elite.
People go way overboard with regards to Scholes.

Ever hear of the supposed zidane quote?
Where Zidane was asked whats it like being the best player in the world, to which he replied "ask paul scholes" lol
Now every man u fans cites that as evidence he was the best player of his era lol

Mind you, you gooners over estimate Bergkamp quite often also.

        Including Xavi with this:

        Xavi Hernandez: ***8220;In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen ***8212; the most complete ***8212; is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn***8217;t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.***8221;
        ^^Another example. lol

Any other players that are being discussed people cite videos, goals, achievements, but with scholes they cite out of context quotes.

Another example being Guadiola. The quote is something like "If I could pick any player to put in my Barcelona team it would be scholes"
But the actual question was which Man utd player would you pick to have in your barca team.

          Paul Scholes better than Zidane

Scholes was underrated while still playing. When he announced his retirement (before he returned) he got ridiculously overrated. He's a level below ATG's like Zidane.

If you put a peak Xavi in the 90's United midfield alongside Roy Keane he would look just as awesome as he did for Barca in their peak.
I don't think so. That's just me though.

I think he's great for a very specific way of playing. I don't think he could play at Jose 1st chelsea, sacchi's milan, heynckes bayern.

That's just my opinion though. Doesn't mean he isn't great. That's not what I am saying at all. Really my whole point is Scholes is just as amazing of a player as Xavi, even if not recognized as the best midfielder of a generation.

Just like 10 years from now no one will mention Ribery but doesn't make him any less a talent to Messi and ronaldo. He may not be better but he's right there at them.

Look at the facts. What did Paul Scholes do outside of his comfort zone at United in the Premiership? Very little.

Great talent. One of the best players ever in the Premier League. But he belongs nowhere near World Legends like Xavi or Zidane.

Paul Scholes once scored a goal in a 5 a side game with average joes.

Yes that's right, an ex professional scored a goal in a 5 a side game!

                  So.Damn.Impressive.

If you had just said that Scholes was just as good as Xavi, just not as high profile I wouldn't have bothered to argue the point.

But that is not all you said. You said he was "garbage" before 2008. You said he "sat on the bench til his late 20's" and that Barca "didn't know what to do what to do with him" until Guardiola took over. All these things are so ludicrous it is hard to take any subsequent opinion of yours on the subject seriously.

And I still can't see how you can say Scholes can play any system but Xavi can't? Paul Scholes probably played more games as a central midfielder in a 4-4-2 than Xavi played as a midfield playmaker in a 4-3-3 at Barca. Scholes played his whole career under one Manager who played more or less the same way for decades. Xavi played under several different managers with several different systems. When Paul Scholes' fans are asked why he didn't perform better on the international stage they usually answer it was because he was often played out of position. That hardly supports his case for being good enough to play in any system.

Scholes was a very good player but Xavi was the best midfielder in the world for 4-5 years.

I wouldn't put Scholes up there with the likes of Zidane either, Xavi yes. What did Xavi do outside his comfort zone of Barcelona? That's a dumb argument.
Well he won the World Cup and two Euros at International level. Believe he was player of the tournament at two of them.

                      So there's that.
