Maybe the board would rather the extra million or whatever it is you get from winning the game against Bayern and take their chances with a tougher last 16 game rather than letting in a goal and lose more prize money chasing the 4th?

I agree that he's ****ed up with the rules but it's stretch to say that we definitely would've scored again and definitely got through the last 16 if he'd not.
