There are other players out there we could have gone for other than Smalling, Jones and Mata. There is no defence, the summer has been a disaster and the fault lies solely at those in charge.

But he can compete financially with the likes of Tottenham and didn't bother trying. With the sale of Nasri and Fabregas and qualifying for the champ's league he had, what, 80 million pounds to spend and he spent the entire time making desultory offers to slightly-above-average players.
