Really annoys me when people talk about assists, it's all nonsense. The whole team helps in assisting a goal unless it's a solo effort. Furthermore you can supply the ball that goes in to the box or pass to whoever but if that ball gets a slight deflection off the opposing team then it's not counted as an assist even though the player supplying the ball has made it happen. It's not always the person who has had the most influence on the move leading up to the goal who gets the assist either.

Counting assists is useless you can just watch the game and decide for yourself who the stand out player was in the move that lead to the goal. This is when statistics just gets ridiculous and are unreliable.

Sometimes assists show the awareness and lack of selfishness of a player who isn't in the best position so he spots a teammate and picks him out.

Assists tell alot about who contributes to the teams overall goal tally.

I wasn't even talking about Valencia and Cole i was just stating that the way assists are counted is flawed and clouds the truth sometimes. I don't see the need to count assists who cares who puts the final ball in? All anyone cares about is whether the ball goes in the net or not.

If Nani is so influential in play and has lots of assists then why did he not play today? Shows how useless statistics are in football. It's like when people bring up shots or shots on target and possession and use it as a way to judge how a match went or use it as an excuse when they lose. Stats can't explain why a football match is lost or won so when people bring up all this rubbish it's mainly for people who don't know what they are talking about. Arsenal had more shots, more possession and more corners than Stoke and they lost 3-1 today.
