He was to Liverpool what Scholes is to United, a passer
Alonso may hold his position in midfield, but he's no defensive midfielder.
He is not a Mascerano type DMF, but he would still be described as a DMF in loose terms, he's a deep lying playmaker/DMF in the role of a Pirlo, but he is capable of pinching the ball back in situations imo.

Alonso offers more protection than Scholes.

                  Just about
Spain play him in a holding role
They wouldn't play him in that role however, if they didn't expect to have majority possession
The same way Barca could afford to play him there
Madrid and Liverpool cannot play like them, so he plays alongside a ball winner... same way Scholes plays alongside Fletcher.

Well its catch 22, cause he helps them keep the ball imo.

I dont disagree he needs a ball winner beside him, but so did Vieira, when he played with Cesc they didn't click, but Gilberto offered him the platform to do what he did, get up and down the pitch thundering into tackles, he still made sure he did his defensive duties.

I have lost sight of the point we are both making here, what is it?

That Fletcher and Alonso are very different players.
