Essien is such a good player that he's still world-class in the holding midfield role.

Scholes.. Quality player, world-class back in his prime and is still a top-notch central-midfielder but I wouldn't play him ahead of Meireles. Here's why - he's either going to; (1) get sent off for a bad challenge or two, (2) get injured, (3) get bullied by the other players on the pitch for being a ginger.

Rafael is still very young and inexperienced he has played Ribery, Bale and others well but he needs to watch his temper.

Lucas Leiva is older, he was born before your fake Lucas so my Lucas is the original.

Lucas is a beast.

Let me guess, you only think he's crap because he doesn't score or assist much? That shows how very limited your knowledge of the role of a "holding/defensive midfielder" is.

Lucas' job is to:
- shield his defense,
- win the ball by making tackles (he's made the 2nd highest amount of tackles this season in the league)
- win the ball by making interceptions,
- sometimes intentionally foul opponents when necessary (doing the dirty work for the team),
roughing up the opposition and making them uncomfortable,
- linking the defense, midfield and attack with quick intelligent passing (which he's very good at)
- not stray too far out of position as this would result in the team losing it's shape,

Every team needs a water-carrier - somebody who can do all the hard-work and make things easier for his team-mates. Lucas is exceptional at doing just that.

Moreover, Lucas is being played out of position. He's always been a box-to-box midfielder (a lot like Raul Meireles), however Rafa Benitez saw potential in him to become a good defensive mid and therefore started playing him there. He's made the position his own for club AND country.

He's first team for Brazil - wearing the famous number 5 shirt, and the national coach has started Lucas in every game this season. Furthermore, in Brazil he's considered a player that is invaluable and is considered as one of only a few players that should definitely be first-team starters come the World Cup in 2014, the others being David Luiz, Neymar and Ganso.

Also, did you know that Lucas won the Bola de Ouro (Brazilian Player of the Year Award) in 2006 aged only 19. To put this into perspective, this is an award that has been previously been awarded to players such as Kaka, Carlos Tevez, Robinho, Zico and Falcão.
