You know, was thinking about it, it seems to me that with so many teams playing 4-5-1, or variations of 4-3-3, which is a pretty defensive formation imo, which can also be construed as a narrow way to play, particularly with the 3 midfielders, that it might be a cycle where we saw football generating more wide players, you know, old fashioned wingers who look to get touch tight and stretch the pitch to negate the congested midfield which is hard to play through.Last edited by Dynamite Kid; 09-03-2010, 12:04 PM.

I get the feeling that the England players aren't as intelligent as other countries in fact when Steven Gerrard has the highest IQ in the squad that says it all imo.
But Upson and Terry= Slow as **** backs did they compensate by playing with intelligence? **** no Upson was up on the half way line all most trying to head the ball from a goal kick.. for a guy who has no pace leaving himself open like that is criminal schoolboy like defending.
On the 3rd goal Glen Johnson had the perfect chance too take a German guy down a clear yellow card but a chance to regroup and all get back, but did he?? hell no. The hilarious thing is that he did do it at 4-1 when the game was totally lost = epic fail
Then the last thing you got Lampard and Gerrard pushing forward, Gerrard tactically is not great we all know it, but they are forward with most of the team. Our defensive Mid barry? is on the edge of the box for some reason and gives the ball away.... leaving us 4 on 2..
I agree with someone who said that England aren't good enough to play like Man United and its true. Man United front 6 all interchange making space which causes trouble for the opposition.. Gerrard, Barry, Lennon, Milner and co are they really up to that?? no i don't think so even if they are on par or better player for player
On Rooney sure he has played well in 4-5-1 at United he has also played well in 4-4-2 with Berbatov. But before that he was overshadowed by Ronaldo and never really played consistently upfront with a partner before that, maybe with Van Nistelrooy he did for a little

I agree with your reply Dynamite. I don't think anyone would want the England job it's ridiculously hard and can destroy careers. The media in this country is relentless and unreasonable in their criticisms.
One thing i would say to defend me saying Capello being rubbish is that we should have got further than the second round regardless of how one dimensional our team is. You can't defend Capello's failure to beat teams like Algeria and USA in the group stages which would have seen us face a less daunting team in the second round, instead we got Germany because we failed to beat average-good teams. Not saying we are a very good team but we are better than Algeria and easilly on par with the USA, we should be beating them.
I do think we are taught wrong because 40 years of not winning anything is a clear statistic that shows our players/teams are not good enough to win things.
I prefer the Rooney we saw last season, he was lethal and one of the best strikers in world football at that point, he's much more matured as a player too. IMO if you're going to play Rooney for Capello's England then you play him on his own up front or you don't play him at all. It's clear he's a different player now and under Capello he hasn't been that spectacular. It's a waste of a player if you are just putting him in because he's Wayne Rooney, may as well put someone on who can make a bigger impact.
I'm not expecting anything good tonight, not really feeling the team selection.Last edited by Joe2608; 09-03-2010, 12:39 PM.

England U21 just scored against Portugal U21. Cleverly put in a lovely ball to Sturridge who got the goal apparently. I don't know the team sheet but i heard Bebe had got a call up to play for Portugal, probably not starting though but i'd be interested to see how he looks if he comes on.

I am not expecting **** either probably a 2-1 or something.. did Berbatov quit internationals last WC qualifying? he wasn't in the predicted team lists i saw in the paper today.

I'm not really a fan of the target man thing, it's exactly what we shouldn't be doing if we are trying to add a bit of skill into our football culture. Playing a target man just invites more long balls which i do not like at all.
Rooney is fine in a 2 man line if he has someone like Berbatov who complements his endevour with a bit of skill who has an eye for a cutting pass, unfortunatley we don't have anyone right now who can do that. I do like Andy Carroll but i get the feeling it will be the same old England sending long balls over to him to try and head down for Rooney, it just doesn't work.

Tevez and Ronaldo leaving gave him a huge responsibility and he thrived on it be it with Berbatov/Owen or alone. Potentially Carrol/Rooney would be the perfect setup eventually imo, that way Rooney could play more of a free role and you have a real bonafide target man who can stir **** up and score in Carrol.

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin believes Dimitar Berbatov’s fantastic early-season form could be due to the arrival of Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.
“The signing of Chicharito has maybe given Berbatov that added pressure he might have needed,” Denis said on MUTV. “Knowing there is a young hungry kid waiting to take his place might have helped to push him on.”
Ex-defender Irwin is especially pleased by Berba answering the boss’ call for more goals.
“We all know about Dimitar’s ability to create goals,” added Denis. “He’s a very talented player, but we needed him to score more goals. Getting a few on the pre-season tour of America will have boosted his confidence and that is definitely showing now. He has certainly started the season well, with two goals in the first three games.”
