OFFICIAL: Aston Villa Sign Habib Beye From Newcastle United On Three-Year Contract
The West Midlanders have move to reinforce their rearguard today...
Aston Villa have today signed Habib Beye from Newcastle United on a three-year contract, with no fee being disclosed by the club's official website.
The versatile full-back has been a transfer target for several clubs this summer, after declaring that he needed to be playing in the Premier League ahead of next week's World Cup in South Africa, with the player harbouring serious ambitions of appearing in the tournament for Senegal.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill has been looking for experienced defensive reinforcement this summer, with Martin Laursen being forced into retirement through injury last season.
Although Beye, 31, a full-back rather than a centre-half like Laursen, he will provide some more nous and experience, much needed with talismanic skipper Gareth Barry also departing to Manchester City earlier in the summer.
Hull City had apparently had a bid accepted by the Magpies for the player yesterday, but it looks now as though Villa have won the race for the player, with Tigers boss Phil Brown left disappointed in the transfer market once again this summer.
