If you want to win the league, which i think is realistic possibility if you can buy well, you are going to need better cover in defence. What you have right now is just ok. You might be stacked there but not exactly oozing quality either.

Not to say that Howedes was the answer as i'm sure he wasn't.

If a player becomes available that will improve the team, you make sacrifices to accommodate them. Howades is not an improvement on what we already have imo.

I think Mertesacker has been declining for a while though and needs replacing sooner or later. Hopefully with someone better than Howades though.

Cech will get Arsenal another 8-10 points by himself. I think he is being a little underrated on here.

I think he has been undervalued by Chelsea too. Although he does only have one year on his contract.

I would argue that Courtouis and Lloris are better than him now - not convinced De Gea is tbh, Cech is a leader and experienced the impact that has on a back 4 is bigger than a quiet keeper who is capable of worldy saves. It makes defenders defend better if a keeper has that status.

Even then - Cech in many ways is a better shot stopper than Courtouis. But being a goalie for a big club in the premiership catching crosses is the order of the day. Cech is not as supreme with them as he once was.

Pre Stephen Hunt I find it hard to believe there has ever been a better goalkeeper than Petr Cech. I am a bit biased but goalkeeper is the one position where it is widely accepted that the athleticism and size of the modern players means no one really gets too nostalgic about the keepers of yesteryear - but for me Cech is one of the best goalkeepers ever.

Gabriel Paulista looks a very good defender tbh. Showed glimpses of class when he played. Even got Mertesacker out of the team for a few games until he got injured.

I'm just glad we're going to have a proper GK in the team. Ospina has been ok, but he has had a few shaky moments and looks a bit short for a Premier League goalkeeper. Would rather him stay then Szczczczczezny, but if it's Ospina that has to make way, then so be it.

If Cech comes in, Ospina has to go. Something about him doesn't sit right with me.

I believe Szczesny will eventually come good and I don't think he will mind playing understudy to Cech for a couple of seasons.

Arsenal need to bag a world class striker this window. Sky is the limit if we accomplish that.
