The same reason that people of African descent are the main populate of the poorest parts of America, probably.

most africans are famers and hearders..
we consider material wealth being rich
they sometimes consider having lots of cattle being wealthy
they are probably looking at you with pitty as well for not owning any
      livestock.
just different forms of living I guess.

Probabl because it's been one big battlefield for Empires such as the French Colonial Empires, Spanish and Portuguese empires, British Empire etc. etc.

        Damn even Belgium.

Dam, even in World War 2 the war ended up in Africa.

Most of the oil in Africa is owned by Western Oil companies such as Shell. Who don't even give the jobs to the African people, but to Western people.

SO in layman's terms, it's just been exploited over and over, with nothing but powerless puppers being stated into charge by the empires.

Even if you look at the World Map, it's quite sick looking at the borders of every country, divided up neatly by the preceeding empires,

Its many factors-one which includes a very unfair western trade system that works against poor african farmers.

So there are two opinoins in this front:
                    1) Africans posess some character flaw which prevents them from having a successful and advancing society
                    2) White people are holding them down

The empire had another indirect side effect on the history of Southern Africa. Gold from the empire inspired in Europeans a belief that Munhumutapa held the legendary mines of King Solomon, referred to in the Bible as Ophir.[11].

The belief that the mines were inside the Munhumutapa kingdom in Southern Africa was one of the factors that led to the Portuguese exploration of the hinterland of Sofala in the 1500s, and this contributed to early development of Mozambique, as the legend was widely used among the less educated populace to recruit colonists. Some documents suggest that most of the early colonists dreamed of finding the legendary city of gold in Southern Africa, a belief mirroring the early South American colonial search for El Dorado and quite possibly inspired by it. Early trade in gold came to an end as the mines ran out, and the deterioration of the Mutapa state eliminated the financial and political support for further developing sources of gold.
