As was stated in the link I posted, the transcript of the conversation also quoted him as saying "be," while acknowledging that phonetically it sounds similar. That's why context is important.
Not only that, but the transcript prepared by CNBC quotes ***** as saying he is "going to be Joe *****," not "going to beat Joe *****." News reports from the Associated Press and the New York Times also quoted ***** in that way.

There is no spinning what ***** says. Either he meant it or not, he mis-spoke or simply forgot he comes out of his mouth with conviction.
There is a reason ***** never let him talk in public and took so long to endorse him.
