[PLEASE HELP] PS3 Just died need to make a decision

My launch date PS3 just died.

Sony said they would replace it.

However I have to make a decision.

They will replace it with either the same model PS3 I have now for $149 + SH or a New Slim Model for $119+ SH.

The only drawback for me getting the slim PS3 is that it doesn't play PS2 game and I still play GTA San Andreas, NFSMW, God of War 1 and 2 and a bunch of other PS2 games regularly.

Also they won't back up my Hard Drives and I can't do it either because my PS3 won't even boot up to the main start up screen.

    So what should I get/do?

    Green K for helpful advice

      I don't think so.

My PS3 just abruptly shut down in the middle of gameplay.

Now the red light flashes when the system is off. Then when I try to turn it on, it will look like it's going to boot up for a split second, then it just shuts back down and the red light flashes.

I can't even get Fight Night Round 4 to eject from the system.

i've done this exchange... and have a slim now...

from launch day i NEVER played a ps2 game in my ps3 so it was no big deal....

sadly though they sent me a broken slim, it powered on and whatnot but the disc loader didnt work, so back it went for free and got a good one

I had the same problem and I exchanged it for a fat PS3 instead of the slim because I already had a slim. Make sure you tell them to give you back your game when they send you a new system.

Does Sony give you a brand new slim for $119?

Same thing happened to me. Exact.

There is no comparison to a PS3 with 4 usbs/flashports/PS2 BC. Period.

but at the time the games I wanted forever were coming so i didn't bother sending it in, and got the slim. If I were you i;d pay 150 and get it fixed. If something you are hurting to play is coming very soon than just buy a slim, it's worth it.

TBH, i dont miss mine at all..... other than the fact it was "launch day" and the nostalgia of the first day i brought it home etc...

but i never use those features... my 80 gig doesnt have them and my slim doesnt either and i'd never have noticed if i didnt know better

if I was you I would try to get it fixed outside of Sony's hands, check craigslist in your area and I'm more than sure you can find someone who's skilled enough to do this. there are many people who are amateurs when it comes to fixing PS3's and then there are those who are professionals with it, people who own the proper tools needed to open it, fix it and make it look like it was never opened u feel me and the best part is they only going to charge you 40-60$ with warranty included. I bought a dud PS3 80gb backwards compatible for 50$ and got it fixed for 60$, the whole shell was DESTROYED in talking cracked everywhere and it didn't boot up, you heard it but couldn't see **** and he changed the whole entire shell and fixed the problem so I basically ended up with a like new 1st gen PS3 for 110$
