Lost and damned question

On the heroin deal, your supposed to go out the first floor right? So my question is if you stay and defend your position on the 3rd floor do the cops keep respawning or do they die and then its clear to proceed? I made it to the road and made the mistake of jumping in the cop car and then got killed as driving away I hate replaying missions so Im asking here.

There are 5 cops on the 3rd floor, 2 on the 2nd and 2 on the first. Then you need to clear out some outside so you can escape. If you haven't got body armor there is some in the room where you start.
