I think that 9 was a great game, a throwback to some of the older games with dungeons and old world cities as opposed to lush fantasy worlds. I could have given a **** about many of the characters, but Vivi is one of the best FF characters ever in my opinion. Zidane...meh, Steiner was ok, Eiko...meh. I feel like this was one of the few FF's (at least as of late) where the characters only got worse as you progressed. Amarant was worthless...Quina too. Once you had Vivi casting Doomsday, Zidane stealing and attacking like lightning, Garnet casting Holy and healing, Steiner doing Thunder Slash...game was over.

A great part about the game was the cut scenes. I didn't like the cuts in 8 very much...same with 10. 7 had amazing cut scenes, I thought 9 did as well. Holy protecting against Bahamut, the airship chase, the white dragon air battle, etc.

One of the biggest drawbacks about 9 was the bosses. Kuja was a feckin *****bag and Ozma was a push over. The final boss was only good for grand cross, but ****** it up besides that. Hades was easy as pie too. Those little goat looking ****s on that little island could be tough for awhile though.

I'd start with the re-release of 6 (3 as it was released on 16 bit initially) if you want to play a classic that came out before 7.

I agree 6 is my second favorite final fantasy game behind 7 of course and some people would even argue that 6 is the best. It's def a great game.

I thought Id like 6 more after I saw some of the artwork a while ago, but the story is kinda silly to me.There was that one really cool scene were one of the characters sees the ghosts of his dead family on that ghost train or whatever it was called, but beyond that i kind of lost interest and havent finished the game.
