no, i don't believe you should be in more pain at first.
i know someone who is currently going to a chiropractor for rehabilitation and the person feels like a million bucks after the sessions. if your back feels worse, perhaps you should find a better chiropractor.
a good strength exercise for the back is "supermans" as mentioned already. if you're up for more of a challenge sometime in the future, see if you can find info on the "bridge pose". it is simply awesome for you're back. it's best to have somebody show you how to do it right though, so you don't hurt yourself as you have to do it in stages if you're not flexible.
of course, consult a physical therapist or your chiropractor to see what would be appropriate for your case and to make sure you do the exercises right. oyu probably shouldn't do anything much yet, however. they(supermans and bridges) are great exercises in addition to crunches and ab exercises as it adds balance to your exercise program.
i know way more vigorous exercises, but these two are good basic exercises.
NJFighter91 listed a lot of good stretches and exercises. i would also add knee to head stretches when you get comfortable with knee to chest.
almost forgot, you're not supposed to do much after going to the chiropractor. you're supposed to take it easy. at least at first.
