Punching Power
Strength
Endurance
Footwork
Punching Speed
Combinations
It also depends on what you're training for specifically. You could work more on your hip rotation and that'll work punching power more but endurance won't be worked as much as hitting it for 30 minutes non stop but at less strength.Last edited by NJFighter91; 08-20-2006, 08:22 PM.

heavy bag is the most viable piece of equipment to better yourself with in my opinion.
it benefits so many things that correlate to boxing if you use it correctly, i.e. not just beat on it but move around and throw particular shots coming out of a movement, ie slide to the left and throw a left hook+straight right, or slide over to your right and lead with a straight right hand then follow it up with a left hook. when you get better at hitting the bag and understand it's resistance when you're on the inside, you'll learn to punch the bag right as it begins it's motion to go the other way after moving from a strike. I.e., throw a big right hook on the bag. Bag swings to your left, then to your right. As the bag reaches it's swing to the right, right before it begins it's swing to the left again, land a hard short left hook. This maximizes the bag's resistance towards your punching muscles and tendons. being relatively new, only been boxing about 4 months, i picked this up by watching a guy who's 30-6 amateur record, work the bag, and copied it.
but ill go ahead and list the benefits of the hvybag since you asked,
increase stamina
help you perfect your punching technique
increase punching power
strengthens & tones the entire body, shots come from the toes upward
lets you get a good judgement of your punch range
develops footwork
EDIT- heh, NJ beat me to it. good to see you spreading around positive posts man. train hard tommarrow, just got back from a long run, shins are killin me and I ran on a soft surface ..

I wish I could train, but gym is closed this week because a few more experienced fighters have some big fights coming up and they go to another bigger gym to train. So this week's gonna suck Might do some shadowboxing and some light jogging. Gotta buy new shoes since my knees kill me when I run.

bummer. Sounds like you have some better fighters at your gym than at mine, though, if they're taking it seriously enough to ride out to another gym to train for a fight. but that reminds me of the other day my gym was closed due to the rain, so i stopped by this mma /boxing gym on the way home. This gym is pricier than mine, like 40 dudes were on the floor wrestling around with a few coaches hollering at em etc. Gladiator's academy in baton rouge. I rode by twice before goin in cuz the bags were kinda close to the guys on the floor, and I didnt want to look like a **** and start wailing away on a heavybag while they're trying to receieve instruction, lol.
I walked in with my hands wrapped and asked for the boxin coach. a guy points him out for me. I'm like, 'care if I get some rounds on a heavybag? I goto the gym at n.10th and laurel, they aren't there today cuz of the weather'. Was a guy who used to goto my gym but left on bad terms with my coach, which i understood, because my coach, while he's a good guy and knows his boxing, can really be a ****. So this guy was like 'yea, go ahead'. I'm like, 'Thanks, are ya sure these other mma coaches dont mind? It might be loud, they seem to be trying to give instructions' ...dude goes '**** them, they're wrestlers, what are they gonna do. have at it' i laughed and got started. Not a bad gym, nice big 22 foot boxing ring, but it's more MMA oriented than anything, and the boxing competition there was composed of a 300 lb black guy who was moving around the ring throwing some soft ass shots and some female fighter who was learning the beginner's steps/footwork, so I haven't even thought about goin back, but I was able to get in 6 rounds on a heavybag when my gym was closed, and for free. anyway, enough of my rambling...i tend to do that when im tiredLast edited by SquareCircle; 08-20-2006, 08:38 PM.

LOL...yeah, good gyms are hard to get by.
The gym they're going to has a lot more people that are experienced. My gym is more of a beginner/intermediate kind. Still good, but at a point, there's no challenge.
