    Bruised Knuckles

Ive been hitting the aqua and heavy bag consistently for about a year now. Recently i began to get some bruising on my knuckles in the area pictured bellow. The bruising seems to happen a lot more often when hitting an aqua bag rather than a regular heavy bag. When i make a fist that knuckle naturally sticks out further than all of my other knuckles in the same area. Ive been focusing on trying to squeeze my fists tighter so that the knuckle doesnt protrude as much as the others and it has helped, but again, its not my natural fist position so it feels uncomfortable to me. Ive also been trying to focus on turning my wrists over a little more so that the main knuckles take the majority of the impact but it feels really awkward and makes me feel like i might end up kinking my wrists instead...

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and could give me some advice on how to fix it.
could it be the fact that my gloves are starting to wear out on me and i might need to replace them?

    Thanks in advance!

I would say that you need to learn to punch correctly

Are you sure that you are not 'slapping' the bag?

And that knuckle looks cracked, do you have experience in some other fighting style? I have NEVER seen that in a boxing setting.

I was thinking it could be that i may be slapping the bag and have been working on turning my punches over more. But I feel like even when i land with my fist flat on the bag, because of the fact that that knuckle protrudes more than the others, it is still taking some of the impact. is this normal?

That is not my fist... just a stock photo from google that i circled in the location i was referring to.

not enough info to make a call..... but my guess is, you are not wrapping your hands correctly

and yes, worn gloves won't help

I use mma gloves, which leaves those knuckles mostly unprotected. When I do damage to the underside of my middle knuckles it means I’m not striking correctly. Concentrate on hitting the bag with your top knuckles.

How in the h-e-double toothpicks could you injure that knuckle boxing? It's not even a fist knuckle, it's a finger knucklle.

Has a ref ever deduct a point from you for illegal blows. punching with out a closed fist? ..........Rockin'

LOL i didnt need to do much scrolling through this forum to know that this guy was going to hate from the jump... i was pleasantly surprised to see that he offered up some decent advice tho

Anyway, im going to work on focusing the impact of my punches on the base knuckles of my fist and see if that helps.

Thanks for the replies... ill be checking this thread every once in a while to see if anyone might have any more advice.

It could be your not bending your wrist as you punch. I was taught there should be a slight inward bend of the wrist to help you land with your knuckles.
Even for experienced guys it’s good to go back over the basics to help you sharpen up.
Also I have had old or cheap new gloves leave me blisters in weird spots. If you are broke sometimes a bit of “Moleskin” on the effected knuckle can help till you get a better pair.
