Open face guard vs. full face guard for sparring?

Look I do not want my boys to get a flat nose. So my rule is if we are sparring some1 (we dont know) and is 10+lbs bigger I have my kids wear a full face guard. If the kid is their age and within 10lbs we go open face head gear.

The other day a Coach told me having them in full head gear will hurt them in the long run.

Is this true? Does full headgear take away toughness?

Headgear only really protects you from cuts and abrasions.

You can still get your nose broken, a black eye, and even knocked out, similar to how the helmet in american football won't protect you from a concussion.

I'd advise anyone, kids or not, to wear headgear when allowed and appropriate. It doesn't make you tougher one way or the other.

A perhaps unintentional value I find in headgear is it makes your head bigger, so you'll be easier to hit if you aren't used to it, but this is a positive to me, once you are able to slip and roll shots with a bulky head gear on, doing it without headgear will be a breeze. Similar to how for ball players hitting a golf ball will make a baseball look huge and unmissable, but the opposite.

You can't deney the inevitable. If they get good with this sport they will certainly have their noses smashed accouple of times at least. I fully appreciate your desire to keep your boys as safe as possible though.

Teach them real defense, something from somebody who truly knows. Offense just comes naturally to a boy, just make sure that he's throwing proper shots and that he uses his eyes.

      Good luck...…...Rockin'

I'd have the kids wear a full face to protect from accidental cuts and head butts. That said, it does make the head a bigger target. Also it is highly debatable if the headgear provides any additional protection for the brain. One thing for certain, I see all the pros wearing headgear when sparring and often full face

                    13yo is 5'6" 119lbs.

                    14yo is 5'7" 126lbs.

My 14yo's main sparring partner is 16 & 142lbs. Most gyms we go to we are sparring kids about the same age & size. 2yrs and 12lbs is a lot so Im just wondering if im being overly cautious.
