    Left hook problem

Hi so when I throw a hook, I notice that my shoulder will come forward while my elbow and arm comes back slightly. For example, when I throw a left hook, my left shoulder will come forward, causing my left elbow and arm to Swing back very slightly before I throw the left hook. Is this something that’s natural/proper form? Or should I try and fix it. I’m still tight and my fist is still near my face, not far away. It feels natural to swing my shoulder back slightly to make room for the hook, but then again I often hear “don’t wind up your punches.” It’s not swung back like I am throwing looping, Wild punches, but it moves back slightly to make room to land my hook, which exposes my face for a slight second. It’s not letting me post a picture because I don’t have 15 posts, but I can send a pic of exactly how it looks in private messages if anyone wants to see exactly what I mean.

Shift your weight instead of 'winding up'.

Shift your weight to your left side, then of course as you throw the hook it transfers to your right. You won't leave your face open.

After a while you'll realize that you're shifting your weight without really moving much. Remember, a hook is a 6 inch punch.

    Hope this helps.

Ok, thanks. This helped me get a better insight on it.

One way to learn proper form is elbow the bag make sure elbow and shoulder are level with each other Elbow from a boxing stance. When you elbow make sure you pivot the front foot turning hips. As you get better you than start using your fist rather than the elbow. Than you will be able to throw a proper hook throw 200 hooks a day. Study fighters on watch Roy Jones how he does that leaping left hook Mike Tyson Hooks or Pipino Cueavas was good at throwing Hooks until Tommy Hearns knock him out

Yes to the elbow thing mentioned above. When throwing the hook imagine that the elbow and fist are one and the same. It takes time and practice to get the hook off quick and not telegraph the punch

I was just about to give very similar advice.

I always had a problem with this because my left hook did not cope with its task at all and my opponent managed to put a good and strong defense

I usually let my shoulder lead my hook. It can create some good power when thrown wide with your elbow up on the shot. Come over top and smash it in his face. Doing this will create a whip affect, where in time you will find your range to make the sheeit really hurt. Good luck in your journey...?..Rockin'

I know a few guys who do this. It's something I never really do. Most of mine are very very short. What you're describing can be extremely effective.

Thank you. Obviously it's an out side kind of hook. Best to mix up the timing of the shots. Quick 1-2, and then the hook comes out of rythme……….Rockin'
