    Protecting your chin

Hi so In some places I have read that you can use your shoulders to protect your chin by rolling them forward. My question is Should they roll forward, or is it best to maintain your posture upright, tuck chin from there, and shoulders in sockets for balance.

my trainer used to tell us to use the regular high guard but switch to shoulder roll when you miss a jab/left hook and see a counter coming. ive gotten my left hand countered maybe four times in 2 years

Your legs, your gloves, your arm, your elbows, any part of your body. Don't be afraid to block using whatever works for you.

For starters though, a high guard is what every boxer should know how to do. It will bail you out when you are hurt.

Learning to protect your chin is practice and knowing how to read punches and distance. It is overall a simple objective. All you have to do is not get hit, which is easier said then done depending on your opponents skill level offensively.

Sometimes shoulders are used to protect the chin. But my coach advised me to pay focus on staying ready for any situation, as it all take place sub consciously.

Solid advice I always keep my shoulders in their sockets.

I keep a high guard but watch out for uppercuts

I was just trying to be funny but that was a lame attempt. I have never heard the phrase of shoulders in their sockets but it made me think of a time when I dislocated my should at the end of a fight. I sure wish I had kept my shoulder in its socket that night.

I’ve been hearing about tucking your chin down while putting your rear hand on your chin. It might’ve been Bernard Hopkins that did a session where he would use a tennis ball under his chin to keep it tucked.
