    Pernell Whittaker Training Routine

Apparently he only ran a maximum of 3 miles a time, twice a week.

The majority of his strength and conditioning training was weight training.

He also did sprints roughly a minute on and a minute off. Yet the sessions lasted two hours, so he was lifting weights the rest of the time?

Obviously the boxing training part of his routine was very effective.

To look at his physique compared to his opponents I would have personally have guessed that he was the runner. He did get effectively stocky as he moved up in weight but he never looked hugely ripped or muscular.

What do you think of his reported training routine? His stamina always looked fantastic.

I hate doing roadwork but I can handle doing 3 miles twice a week.

If that plus some sprints is good enough to get Whitaker into fight shape then it should be more than good enough for me.

Most pros I have heard of do a lot more running than that, though.

The addition of Greco-Roman wrestling was a good idea. It makes you stronger plus has practical applications for fighting in the clinch .

Yep... I went to a salsa convention and I saw male dancers who moved .... no wonder I never could dance.

When I saw this ugly ****,,, he had a line of women waiting to dance with him...

I was asked by latinas to dance... but I couldn’t ..

Sweat pea, like Floyd can dance.

I think you could argue the intervals he was doing would be harder than roadwork, really depends on duration, intensity etc.

I hate doing intervals because once I stop I find it hard to start again, If I was doing a three mile run or longer I'd find it hard to get going but once I'm going I'd cruise almost.

Good article. Pretty cool he was doing sprint intervals in 1990, like a HIIT workout. I'm guessing they left out a few things that were included in his training

Boxers need BOTH long distance roadwork and sprint intervals of some kind.

I'm pretty much convinced of that.

To me it's all about getting the absolute minimum dose of roadwork possible that still gets the job done. 3 miles twice a week would be perfect (as long as it does what it's supposed to.)

His strength training probably burned so many calories that he didn’t need any more cardio.

Except for his cardio in the actual fights?

Plenty of guys who are trim who would gas in out in one or two rounds.
